    About the Cabin
The Cabin That's E for Elvis
Located on the scenic and historic Potomac River in Paw Paw, West Virginia , we offer 15 pristine acres of wild and wonderful wilderness--land first surveyed by George Washington and his brother Laurence back in the 1740s.

Close to Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland, Baltimore, Pennsylvania and every major city in West Virginia…but far away from traffic, noise, television, people you don’t like (if you bring ‘em with you, don’t blame us…) and all the stresses of modern life.

"Land spreading out far and wide...
keep Manhattan just give me that countryside..."

  • Workers removed 82,000 cubic yards of shale to build the Paw Paw tunnel which was completed in 1850.
  • The 24-foot-high tunnel is lined with six million bricks.
  • The town and the tunnel took their names from the paw paw fruit.
  • The completed tunnel was wide enough for only a single boat to pass through at a time. When a boat arrived at a tunnel entrance, a child would be sent to place a lantern at the other end to signal to oncoming boats that the tunnel was already occupied.
  • The Paw Paw Tunnel remains one of the largest artifacts of a period of history known as the Canal Era, a time between 1790 and 1855 when hundreds of canals were constructed all across the US because they were the cheapest and most reliable form of transportation at the time.
  • Today, the Paw Paw Tunnel is maintained by the National Park Service. The C&O Canal no longer runs through the tunnel, so it is possible to investigate the tunnel by foot or bicycle. A flashlight or headlamps are recommended for hikers and bikers.

In addition to the tunnel, the town of Paw Paw is famous for…well, to be honest, not a lot beyond the river, the hiking trails of the C&O Canal and the natural beauty of the region. There’s a rumor that George Washington may have camped there once. Union troops did maintain a good size encampment in Paw Paw throughout much of the Civil War. And Paw Paw is where Ray Benson and the other founding members of the Western swing group Asleep at the Wheel were staying when they decided what to name the band.

But other than the Liberty gas station and a hostel, there’s not much going on in downtown Paw Paw. (Oh yeah, did we forget to mention that the Avalon nudist camp is right down the road…?)

Where is the property located?
Our cottage is located on 15 acres in the town of Paw Paw , West Virginia , approximately two hours from the Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas. For security reasons, we don’t provide specific instructions until after guests have booked the cottage.

The cottage is located within a gated community that is locked up at night, and you’ll need to use a key to access the main gate after hours.

What’s a Paw Paw?
The pawpaw is North America ’s largest native edible fruit and grows abundantly throughout West Virginia.

What can you tell me about the cottage itself?
Long Time Gone Cottage has two bedrooms and one bath. The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed, while the second bedroom is a double. The couch folds out into a double-bed sized futon, so the cabin offers sleeping space for six people.

The cottage was totally renovated this year, but has been fitted out with fixtures, such as an antique sink and claw foot bathtub, that seek to mix the modern amenities of today with the charm of yesteryear.

Centrally heated, the cottage does have electricity and phone service (not broadband, but suitable for reasonably fast dial-up Internet access) and fireplace and lots of charm. It is not air conditioned, but we find that the ceiling fans and open windows keep things cool on even the hottest days.

Is smoking permitted?
Smoking is absolutely not permitted and any guest who smokes inside the building will forfeit their security deposit. We appreciate your cooperation!

You may smoke outside the cottage, but ask that you do not leave cigarette butts or ashes, and that you exercise caution in disposing of matches and smoking materials that could spark a fire.

What else does the cabin provide?
Other amenities include:

  • A gas grill.
  • A fully fitted out kitchen, including dishes, cookware, a microwave & toaster oven.
  • Dining room seating for 6.
  • Inner-tubes and life jackets for 8 people.
  • Books, games, cards. Note:
  • Pillows and bedspreads are provided.
Towels and linens are not. Because of space limitations, we do not have a washer and dryer.
  • The cottage does not have trash service, so all trash must be hauled out when you depart.

Does the cottage have television?
We do not provide a TV in part because we think there’s too many other fun things to do while you are there, but also because you can’t get decent TV reception in Paw Paw. We do provide a boom box with a CD player.

What is there to do in Paw Paw?
To be perfectly honest, other than the Paw Paw Tunnel and the Liberty gas station, things are pretty quiet in downtown Paw Paw. Of course if you’re feeling adventurous, the Avalon nudist camp is located just down the road.

The Floating E is just about 30 minutes away from the scenic locales of Berkeley Springs, WVa., Cumberland, MD and Winchester, VA.
